Liberty in America is under siege. Civil Asset Forfeiture, TSA check points, NSA spying, Indefinite Detention, a camera on every corner and peering into citizens’ homes… these are just a few examples of what Americans face today.

Merely being suspected of a crime – or caught with “too much cash” – can result in the loss of property under the legalized theft that is Civil Asset Forfeiture, while posting a controversial statement on the Internet that some bureaucrat might find suspicious can land you in a military prison… indefinitely.

Citizens are under constant government surveillance, whether by the NSA recording every keystroke and conversation or by local police using StingRay technology, Red Light Cameras, and drones, seemingly waiting for someone to slip up.

With few laws in place regarding state use of new surveillance technology, law enforcement can covertly peer into your windows, listen to your conversations, and track your every move throughout the day – all without a warrant, or even a suspicion that you’ve done anything wrong.

And with few laws in place limiting how the state can use the data collected, the story of your life will be entered and stored in massive databases at a minimum, and if details gleaned suggest you’ve broken any of the hundreds of thousands of laws in place, those details can and will be used against you in a court of law.

It’s said the average American is guilty of breaking 3 federal laws every single day and they don’t even know it – and that doesn’t even factor in state laws. With absolutely no intent or even the knowledge that you’re doing something wrong, you could easily end up on the wrong side of the Police State.

And being on the wrong side of the Police State opens citizens up to no-knock raids, a practice that is now commonly used to serve search warrants for non-violent offenses. Militarized police in fatigues and body armor, carrying assault weapons and explosive devices, and riding in armored military vehicles, are given approval to lay siege on citizens, most often in the dark of night while families are sleeping.

Before assuming innocent people aren’t being targeted, consider America’s prison population. While the U.S. has less than 5% of the world’s population, it incarcerates almost a quarter of the world’s prisoners – most of whom are non-violent offenders. Our incarceration rate ranks above such countries as Russia, Cuba, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, El Salvador, and almost all others.

Are citizens of the United States really so much more nefarious than their global counterparts or is something more odious afoot?

Many (if not most) laws that infringe on your rights are passed every year because some powerful, establishment insiders and their well-financed cronies hit the right pressure points and bought the right legislators to get the job done. This is especially true on this issue. Drones, military surplus vehicles, StingRay devices, Red Light Cameras – all of these things are a boon to corporate profits.

There is much that can be done at the state and local level to stop many of these infringements. Campaign for Liberty state groups have derailed pieces of the surveillance state, like Red Light Cameras, state drone use, civil asset forfeiture, the acquisition of military surplus vehicles, and more, but there is more work to do. That’s why we need your help.
