What is Civil Asset Forfeiture?
Under civil forfeiture police and prosecutors can seize your property, sell it, and use the proceeds to fund government agency budgets.
In fact, the owner of the property doesn’t even need to be guilty of a crime, so authorities are able to seize your car, home, money, or valuables without ever having to charge you with a crime - civil asset forfeiture proceedings charge the property itself with involvement in a crime.
Referred to as “legal thievery,” civil asset forfeiture has become big business for government at all levels. It generates billions of dollars annually.
There are many examples of innocent people being stripped of their money and property by federal, state, and local authorities - without due process - and it is time to fight back.
It is critically important to pass legislation at the state level. Legislation must be passed at the federal level as well (when the feds are called in, their actions aren’t covered by state law), and Campaign for Liberty supports enacting federal legislation to end this practice as well.
