Dear Georgia Citizen,

Schoolchildren all over the state of Georgia are being unfairly targeted for minor transgressions against so-called “zero tolerance” laws. Two recent cases in Cobb County highlight the ridiculousness of these laws, which criminalized EMT tools, fishing tackle, and fireworks that were found in unwarranted searches of cars in school parking lots.

End “Zero Tolerance” Laws! to My State Representative and Senator: WHEREAS: “Zero tolerance” policies in Georgia’s public schools are criminalizing harmless and unintentional acts by students; and WHEREAS: The criminalization of minor school code violations overburdens Georgia’s juvenile courts; and WHEREAS: “Zero tolerance” policies violate students’ due process rights, including those students old enough to be tried as adults. THEREFORE: I demand an end to “zero tolerance” policies in Georgia’s schools and further demand that students’ rights be fully honored on school property.
