Rep. Massie Tells Leadership #NoNetTax

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) sent a letter to House leadership opposing H.R. 684, the so-called "Marketplace Fairness Act" and urging them not to bring it up for a vote.  Massie was joined on his letter by 15 bipartisan signers. Read the letter in full here.

In his press release announcing his letter to leadership, Massie said:

“I’m a strong proponent of the tenth amendment. But this bill does not protect state’s rights. In fact, this bill changes the very fabric of the United States of America by subjecting people and businesses in one state to taxes and regulations of another state. This is unprecedented.”

Rep. Thomas Massie has taken the lead on opposing the National Internet Tax Mandate, as C4L calls it. Last month, he and two other congressmen, Steve Daines (R-MT) and Ron DeSantis (R-FL), spoke out against the Internet sales tax scheme in a half-hour special order floor speech.

In his speech, Rep. Massie remarked,

“For the first time in history, with this bill, Congress would grant states jurisdiction beyond their physical borders. If this bill passes, we’ll have a virtual United States of America, where borders no longer mean anything. Justice Marshall said that the power to tax is the power to destroy. And as recent revelations of wrongdoing at the IRS demonstrate, the power to tax is the power to harass.”

Contact your representative and urge them to oppose any Internet sales tax scheme, especially the so-called "Marketplace Fairness Act," H.R. 684.
