On Thursday night, defenders of the Constitution and civil liberties won a major victory, when the Massie-Lofgren amendment to curb the NSA's abuse of authority overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House by a vote of 293-123, with 1 member voting "present," and 14 not voting.
You can see how your representative voted below.
As previously stated on our blog, the Massie-Lofgren amendment reins in the NSA by denying funds for so-called “backdoor surveillance” and warrantless searches of Americans electronic communications under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act.
The battle turns to the Senate, where we must fight to make sure the "upper chamber" passes a Defense appropriations bill with the amendment language included.
Thursday's victory proves just how effective grassroots pressure can be and how much ground we are gaining. While many members would certainly have been outraged by the disclosures concerning the NSA's activities and pushed for reform, the controversy has only resulted in concrete action because of liberty-minded Americans refusing to back down. Your voice backs up the efforts of pro-change representatives on the inside and helps encourage more members to support the resulting legislation - until the tidal wave of pressure leads to massive wins like this one.
But total victory comes one step at a time, and next up is the Senate. So after you check the vote results below, please contact your senators and urge them to support the pro-Fourth Amendment language passed by the House on Thursday night as part of the Defense appropriations bill.
