John Tate Slams Internet Tax Mandate

SPRINGFIELD, Virginia - Today, Campaign for Liberty President John Tate released the following statement concerning S.743, the “Marketplace Fairness Act”:

“Proponents of the Internet Tax Mandate want us to believe this legislation is all about ‘fairness.’ But there is nothing fair about corporate lobbyists using the strong arm of government to put their smaller competitors out of business.

“There is nothing fair about governors looking to the federal government to take more money from their state’s citizens because legislators refuse to budget and prioritize. And there is nothing fair about forcing our nation’s small businesses to collect sales taxes for the nearly 10,000 different tax jurisdictions nationally.

“Despite what tax lobbyists, including David French of the National Retail Federation, believe, the U.S. Constitution is not an outdated document.  It’s more relevant today than ever.  The federal government should be encouraging commerce between the states, not turning the Commerce Clause on its head to impose new taxes and regulations on the most dynamic sector of the economy.

“Campaign for Liberty will continue our aggressive campaign to defeat this misguided legislation and we will hold every senator and representative who supports this White House-backed, job-destroying tax hike accountable.”
