Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) celebrated Festivus, the “holiday” created by Seinfeld’s Frank Costanza, by airing his grievances in the form of a year-end edition of his Waste Report.
Among the examples of wasteful spending that make Senator Paul’s airing of grievances is the $708,466 the National Institute of Health spent getting Zebrafish hooked on nicotine.
In addition to the Zebrafish debacle, other highlights include:
- $20,000,000 to teach Lao to Laotians;
- $128,054 to develop undergraduate courses in food marketing;
- $4,648,865 to study the link between drinking and going to the emergency room;
- $22,000,000 to bring Serbian cheese up to international standards.
This is just a small sample of the waste Senator Paul has uncovered. With the federal deficit soon to exceed $1 trillion, stopping the federal government from wasting money on projects like getting the poor Zebrafish hooked on nicotine should not be a feat of strength.
