New York congressional candidate (and rising Democratic and mainstream media star) Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is being mocked for saying that America needs to fight climate change the way we fought Nazi Germany.
I understand the desire to mock this statement, but we should take it as the serious agenda of the “watermelons”— so-called environmentalists who are green on the outside and red (as in Soviet Union Red) on the inside.
During World War Two, the U.S. government imposed rationing and price controls on U.S. citizens. The Roosevelt administration also used the war as an excuse to crackdown on their political enemies, as Justin Raimondo wrote about in his classic Reclaiming the American Right. (You can buy Justin’s book and help Campaign for Liberty here).
The U.S. government also seized property and detained Japanese-Americans as a “security” measure.
And of course, there is the ultimate violation of civil liberties- the draft.
And no, World War Two did not end the Great Depression.
So, Miss Ocasio-Cortez wants the government to seize control of the economy and implement central planning, complete with government rationing of goods and services and price controls to fight climate change. Never mind that the science on climate change is not settled or that the free-markets have a much better track record of protecting the environment than government. Environmentalists want to use government force to silence the so-called climate deniers.
It’s easy to dismiss her, but she represents a large and growing movement that seeks to use fears about climate change to justify massive increases in government power. Campaign for Liberty is committed to fighting any and all attempts to resort to force in the name of fighting climate change. Please join our efforts.
